A 15-inch Fred Zier (ZZZ) "Doorknob" model is one of the absolute holy grails of vintage big-game offshore trolling lures.
The "Doorknob" design—characterized by a short, blunt, heavily rounded head resembling a vintage household doorknob—is famous for creating a massive, distinct smoke trail and aggressive surface-swimming action that giant marlin and tuna cannot resist.
Why a 15" Zier Doorknob is Exceptional
- The Massive Scale: While Fred Zier built several 8-inch bullets and 12-to-13-inch chuggers, a true 15-inch model is an extreme "Grander" class lure (designed specifically to target 1,000lb+ blue marlin). Zier produced very few heads of this gargantuan size because the complex internal multi-piece machining and balance required for a 15-inch resin head was incredibly difficult to perfect.
- The Rarity Compound: The doorknob shape itself is rarer than his classic bullet profiles. Combining a rare shape with his largest possible frame size makes this model highly sought after by serious high-end tackle collectors.
